Staten Island Lighthouse

21.5" x 14"
Pencil

When approaching the Staten Island Lighthouse for the first time, it is difficult to imagine how it is all but forgotten when discussing the prominent lighthouses of America. As you get closer, you immediately discover the tower's striking beauty and architectural details that prompted the New York Times to write that the lighthouse was "destined to take its place among the famous beacons of the world" upon its completion in 1912. Today, it stands in disrepair on a small plot of land in a residential neighborhood surrounded by private property, all but unknown to anyone other than local residents. My intention with this drawing is for the viewer to discover, as I did, the beauty of its stone trimmings, ornate cast-iron brackets and other details that make up this magnificent, forgotten lighthouse.
